The basic principle

Foliar fertilizer reaches your plants faster and more effectively than traditional soil-based fertilizers.

Foliar fertilizers are nutrient solutions that are applied directly to the leaves of a plant so that they can immediately absorb the substances they contain. The key difference to traditional fertilization via the soil is that the plant does not first have to absorb the fertilizer through its roots, which takes longer and means less nutrient absorption in relation to the amount of fertilizer. Instead, the nutrients enter the plant tissue directly via the leaf surface, primarily through the stomata and the thin wax layer. This makes foliar fertilizers a particularly fast and targeted method of remedying nutrient deficiencies and helping plants.

The plant can absorb the nutrients from a foliar fertilizer within a few hours to days and integrate them into its metabolism. Foliar fertilization is particularly suitable when the soil provides nutrients only slowly or insufficiently—for example, due to cold, drought, unfavorable pH values, or soil compaction. It is therefore less for basic care and more for rapid support in stressful situations and for specifically compensating for certain deficiencies. Direct absorption allows the effect to be controlled very precisely, especially when foliar fertilizers such as Viovera have been designed and developed for specific challenges.

The areas of application:

Foliar fertilizer is used in professional agriculture when nutrients need to be delivered to plants in a targeted and efficient manner.

Foliar fertilizers are always used when plants need nutrients quickly and specifically — especially in situations where supply via the soil is limited, delayed, or disrupted. A typical application is acute nutrient deficiencies, such as magnesium deficiency during strong plant growth or iron deficiency in sensitive crops. Since foliar uptake has an immediate effect, such deficiencies can be compensated for much more quickly than via the root system. Stress situations such as cold spells, drought, or waterlogging can also block nutrient uptake via the soil. In such phases, foliar fertilization ensures that the plants continue to grow and their metabolic processes remain stable.

This is particularly important in intensive crops such as vegetable, fruit, or wine growing. Foliar fertilizers have become indispensable, especially in professional agriculture. Another reason for their use is the targeted fine control of growth. Foliar fertilizers can support plants at certain stages of development. Whether to promote leaf formation, flowering, or fruit quality, they enable precise supply without altering the entire soil balance. Despite their advantages, however, foliar fertilizers are not a substitute for a complete fertilization strategy. They are a complementary tool that is particularly effective when quick reactions or precise corrections are required to get the most out of your plants.

The composition:

Viovera has the right product for every situation, every plant, and every challenge.

Foliar fertilizers consist of specially formulated nutrient solutions that are designed to be easily absorbed by plants through their leaves. Their composition therefore differs significantly from soil fertilizers. The core components are usually macronutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, but mostly in lower concentrations, as leaves can only absorb limited amounts at a time. Leaf fertilizers also contain micronutrients such as iron, manganese, zinc, boron, and copper. These trace elements are absorbed particularly efficiently through the leaves and are crucial for quickly remedying acute deficiency symptoms.

In addition, many formulations contain additives that improve absorption or support plant metabolism. These include wetting agents that distribute the drops more evenly on the leaf, amino acids that facilitate transport within the plant, and biostimulants that mitigate stress responses. pH stabilizers are also often included to keep the solution within the optimal range. At Viovera, we develop highly specific foliar fertilizers that are precisely tailored to the individual requirements of your plants. Our wide range provides your plants with the right nutrients for every specific problem, enabling you to get the maximum yield from your plants.

Practical application

The foliar fertilizer is sprayed evenly onto the plants in the morning or evening to achieve maximum effect and protect the plants.

The practical application of foliar fertilizers requires some care to ensure that the nutrients are optimally absorbed and the plants are not damaged. As a general rule, the conditions must be right. Foliar fertilization is most effective in the early morning or late afternoon when temperatures are moderate and the leaves are not exposed to direct sunlight. This allows the solution to evaporate more slowly and the plant to absorb it better. Windless periods are also advantageous so that the spray mist is not blown away. Concentration plays an important role here. Foliar fertilizers are diluted much more than soil fertilizers to avoid leaf burn.

Our manufacturer’s instructions must be strictly adhered to when using Viovera foliar fertilizer. When mixing with plant protection products, always check whether the substances are compatible, as certain combinations may reduce the effect or stress the plant. However, Viovera is generally known to be highly compatible with other substances. In practice, foliar fertilizers are usually applied with pressure sprayers, backpack sprayers, or fine mist nozzles. It is important to evenly wet the upper and lower sides of the leaves without causing dripping. Several light applications are often more effective than a single high dosage.
